This song is first and foremost about obsession. Ever since I've known what it is to feel like all the pieces are coming together for the first time in my life, I've been obsessed about this feeling : having found the one for me, the perfection of it, how it surpassed everything I had ever thought imaginable, and how it made even my worst missteps feel like they contributed to what made this perfect outcome possible.
But when things started to change, I stayed obsessed about this feeling and most of my thoughts revolved around bringing this perfect past back to life; there had to be a way, at least I firmly believed it. But trying to recreate the past brought me to obsess over things that weren't there anymore, or things we didn't do anymore. And although I was desperately trying to rebuild our connection, all that this obsession did was to build a wall between us.
I wish we would have both had had the desire to find ourselves the way we once did, but the hard-to-swallow truth is that things change for a reason. I may not like it, but had she wanted things to be how they once were, that's what would have happened, because we would have wanted the same thing, again, finally. But instead of seeing what she needed then, I kept thinking that nothing could ever surpass what we once knew, and I froze in time, far away from her, in the shallow memories of our perfect collision.
Without even realizing it, I left her alone, desperately waiting for her somewhere she didn't want to be. And I waited and waited for years, until I realized it.
This song is the moment when it's too late, but I refuse to accept it's too late, and maybe that was all meant to be, just so we can find ourselves again another time, so perfectly like we once did.
What I need is just one last chance to start over again, but this time, I'm never going to isolate myself in the souvenir of our past, because that perfection can only be lived at the present tense. Things from the past may seem perfect when we think about them, but it's just because our mind chooses not to think about all the stuff that wasn't so great after all. There is nowhere else I need to be but right here, right now, with her.
